Abdulrasheed Maina, Ex-Pension Director, Rushed to Hospital After Office Collapse

Abdulrasheed Maina, former head of the now-defunct Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT), was admitted to hospital Tuesday after collapsing while ascending a staircase at his workplace.
According to his media aide Emmanuel Nweke, Maina lost his footing on the stairs, struck his head during the fall, and briefly lost consciousness before receiving medical attention.
Background on Legal Troubles
The 62-year-old former pension administrator has faced ongoing legal challenges in recent years:
- Criminal Conviction: Courts previously handed Maina an eight-year sentence related to pension fraud and money laundering charges involving approximately ₦2 billion.
- Previous Medical Episodes: During his 2020 trial, Maina collapsed in the courtroom, raising questions about his fitness to stand trial.
- Health-Based Appeals: His legal team has repeatedly cited declining health conditions, including vision problems and heart-related concerns, in petitions for compassionate release.
Public Response and Timing
News of the incident has generated skepticism among Nigerians on social media, particularly given its timing alongside other legal developments in the capital.
Some observers have noted the contrast between Maina’s circumstances and those of ordinary citizens struggling with Nigeria’s current economic challenges. The hospitalization comes during a period when several other former government officials are facing corruption-related court proceedings.
Medical Update
Healthcare providers are currently assessing the severity of Maina’s head injury. Authorities have not yet indicated whether this development will impact any pending legal matters or his obligations to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The nature and location of Maina’s current “office” employment has not been publicly clarified.
