The Police Command in Kano State says it has arrested 107 suspects for alleged involvement in various crimes in the state within the last one month.
The Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Bakori, disclosed this while briefing newsmen on Monday at the command’s headquarters in Bompai, Kano.
Bakori said the suspects were arrested for offences including armed robbery, kidnapping, human trafficking, illicit drug trafficking, motor vehicle and motorcycle theft, and thuggery.
According to him, those arrested comprised eight suspected armed robbers, eight kidnappers, three human trafficking suspects, 14 drug dealers, two suspected motor vehicle thieves, six motorcycle thieves, five suspected thieves, and 61 suspected thugs, popularly known as Yan Daba.
He added that one human trafficking victim was also rescued.
The commissioner said the command recovered one AK-47 rifle, seven fabricated guns, 11 live ammunition, seven motor vehicles, eight motorcycles, and seven cows from the suspects.
Other exhibits recovered, he said, included 102 cutlasses, 74 knives, 111 parcels and 458 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Cannabis Sativa, 211 pieces of suspected rubber solutions, 257 bottles of substances known as ‘Suck and Die’ and 44 pieces of Kampala textile materials.
“From the launch of ‘Operation Kukan Kura’ on July 1 to date, a total of 473 weapons and a large quantity of illicit drugs have been recovered,” he said.
Bakori explained that the operation was in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, on community-centred policing.
He said the strategy incorporated both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches, designed to foster public participation and enhance collaborative efforts in crime prevention.
The commissioner commended officers of the command for their dedication, and assured residents that the police would continue to adapt strategies to tackle crime and ensure peace and stability in the state.
