PDP risks collapse if Obi rejoins – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has warned that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) risks collapse if it allows former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, to return to its fold.

Wike, who spoke during a media chat on Monday in Abuja, said the move would amount to self-destruction for the party.

He said the PDP had failed to learn from the mistakes that cost it victory in the 2023 general elections.

The minister recalled that he had cautioned against allowing both the party’s presidential candidate and the national chairman to emerge from the North, describing the arrangement as unjust and politically unwise.

“From day one, I told my colleagues in PDP, you are shooting yourself. You cannot have the presidential candidate and at the same time the national chairman of the party,” he said.

The former Rivers governor accused the party of ignoring calls for fairness, stressing that such arrogance contributed to its defeat at the polls.

According to him, the presidency must rotate to the South to guarantee equity and political stability.

On speculation about Obi’s possible return, Wike dismissed the idea as dangerous, arguing that it would further damage the party’s credibility.

“To what? Bringing Obi to where? You want to kill the party? Obi that was abusing the PDP, saying it is rotten—so the party is now good enough for him? Ambition can make people go anywhere,” he said.

He maintained that PDP would only regain national relevance if it embraced equity, justice and zoning.
