Kano House passes supplementary appropriation bill

The Kano State House of Assembly on Monday approved a 215.3 billion naira supplementary budget for the 2025 fiscal year, raising the state’s spending plan to more than 935 billion naira.

The measure followed a request from Governor Abba Yusuf, which was read in plenary last week.

Speaker Jibril Falgore, who presided over Monday’s sitting, said lawmakers had “carefully reviewed and debated the supplementary appropriation before passing it into law.”

“The House will continue to monitor implementation of the supplementary budget to make sure that the money allocated is used strictly for the purposes intended,” Falgore said, adding that the legislature would exercise oversight on ministries, departments and agencies.

Majority Leader Lawan Husseini (NNPP-Dala) told lawmakers that the additional spending would support the upkeep of newly established government agencies not covered in the initial budget.

He said funds would also go to school renovations, infrastructure development and urban renewal projects.

Kano’s initial 2025 budget, presented in November 2024, stood at 719.8 billion naira and was tagged the “Budget of Hope, Human Capital, and Economic Development.” It allocated 457.08 billion naira, or 64%, to capital expenditure and 262.67 billion naira, or 36%, to recurrent costs.
