Despite Tinubu’s directive, nothing has changed in Yelewata – TIV leader laments

Victor Aleva, the president of Mzough U Tiv UK (MUTUK) has decried the continuous attacks and mass killings by some suspected armed herders across Yelewata village in Benue State.

Aleva said that despite President Bola Tinubu’s visit and his directive to the Inspector General of Police and other Service chiefs, nothing appears to have changed.

Recall that following the mass murder of over 200 people by suspected armed herdsmen in Yelewata village in June, President Tinubu visited Makurdi, Benue State’s capital city to commiserate with the people and assess the level of damage caused.

During his visit, the president ordered the IGP and other security agencies’ heads to ensure the immediate arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators of the attack.

Shortly after the president’s visit, the police announced the arrest of about 26 suspects in connection with the Yelewata killings.

However, speaking on Channels Television on Wednesday, Aleva said the situation has remained the same.

“I was there in Yelewata last-week Saturday and I saw things myself and I want to tell you that it is quite unfortunate. It is not about playing to the gallery or just saying things and being political. As I speak, nothing has changed,” Aleva said.

Also describing the claim by the police on the arrest of the suspects as a lie, Aleva said there is a calculated effort to cleanse the community of its rightful owners.

He said, “I told you here during my earlier interview that nothing good is going to come out of the President’s visit to Benue State. All those are just political; nothing is happening in Yelewata. I have video evidence, I have an interview from the locals, I was there live with my entourage.

“You know that is a lie. Because the president went there and scolded the Inspector-General of Police, and just less than 48 hours or thereabout, they paraded some people,” he added.

Speaking further, he queried the police claim and the location of the arrested suspects, it is been past two months since the incident and nothing new has happened to ensure the safety of the people of Yelewata.

Aleva queried, “Where are the people? That incident actually happened, I think on the 13th and 14th of June, which is more than two months ago. Where are the people?”
