Trump Threatens to Deport Elon Musk Over Political Rift

Former allies turned rivals, Donald Trump and Elon Musk are now at loggerheads, with Trump suggesting the world’s richest man could face deportation over a growing political feud.
Musk, once Trump’s biggest donor in the 2024 election and later appointed to head the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), is now mulling a new political party to fight Republican lawmakers backing Trump’s controversial “One Big Beautiful Bill.”
In response, Trump lashed out while visiting a newly opened migrant detention center in Florida, nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz.”
“We’ll have to take a look,” Trump said when asked if he would consider revoking Musk’s citizenship, even though the Tesla and SpaceX boss has been a U.S. citizen since 2002.
Trump didn’t stop there. He hinted at going after the massive government contracts and subsidies awarded to Musk’s companies.
“No more Rocket launches, Satellites, or Electric Car Production, and our Country would save a FORTUNE,” he said. “Perhaps we should have DOGE take a good, hard, look at this? BIG MONEY TO BE SAVED!!!”
In another jab, he added: “We might have to put DOGE on Elon. You know what DOGE is? DOGE is the monster that might have to go back and eat Elon.”
Later in Florida, Trump said, “I don’t think he should be playing that game with me.”
Musk, for his part, appeared tempted to strike back. Reacting to a post about Trump’s deportation comments on X, he posted: “So tempting to escalate this. So, so tempting. But I will refrain for now.”
Trump’s threats sent Tesla shares tumbling nearly five percent on Tuesday.
Earlier, Trump had claimed Musk’s opposition to the bill stemmed from the removal of measures supporting the electric vehicle (EV) industry.
“Elon may get more subsidy than any human being in history, by far,” he posted on Truth Social. “Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa.”
Trump and Musk had briefly shared a public friendship earlier this year. Musk wore MAGA hats and stood beside Trump regularly. Trump, in turn, defended Tesla when protesters targeted the company for job cuts tied to Musk’s government role.
But that relationship soured in May after Musk criticized the spending bill and walked away from DOGE.
Since then, Musk has been vocal on X, attacking the bill as reckless and accusing Republicans of betraying fiscal responsibility and America’s future in clean energy.
“All I’m asking is that we don’t bankrupt America,” Musk wrote Tuesday.
The bill, a centerpiece of Trump’s second-term agenda, would extend his previous tax cuts and ramp up border security, but would also strip millions of poor Americans of healthcare and add \$3 trillion to the national debt.
Now, Musk is threatening to hit Republicans where it hurts: their re-election campaigns. He has floated creating a new political party — the “America Party” — and backing primary challengers against GOP lawmakers who support Trump’s bill.
“VOX POPULI VOX DEI 80% voted for a new party,” Musk posted after running a poll on X, signaling he’s ready for war.
