Professor Haruna Musa, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics) and a Professor of Polymer Chemistry, has emerged as the most supported candidate in Bayero University, Kano (BUK)’s Vice-Chancellor selection process after the Congregation Parley held on Tuesday, July 1, 2025.

Musa received 853 votes from 1,784 accredited voters, ahead of four other candidates.

The other contenders included Professor Mahmoud Umar Sani, former DVC (Management Services), who polled 367 votes; Professor Sani Muhammad Gumel, former DVC (Academics), who scored 364 votes; Professor Adamu Idris Tanko with 161 votes; and Professor Bashir Fagge with 18 votes.

Seventeen votes were declared invalid, while four were unaccounted for.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas, who supervised the election, said the Congregation Parley contributes 20% to the total criteria used by the Governing Council in selecting the next Vice-Chancellor.

“This process reflects the strength of our democratic and transparent institutional culture,” Prof. Abbas said. “I encourage all contestants to continue to support the University and rally around whoever is ultimately appointed by the Governing Council.”

Chair of the Electoral Committee, Professor Muhtari Ali Hajara, announced the results and confirmed Professor Musa as the candidate with the highest number of valid votes.

Professor Sani Muhammad Gumel, one of the candidates, expressed satisfaction with the conduct of the exercise. “The election was fair, transparent, and credible. The result clearly indicates the direction of the University community,” he said.

The Governing Council is expected to make the final decision, taking into account additional criteria such as leadership ability, administrative experience, and vision. However, the result of the Congregation Parley shows the preferred direction of the university community.
