Atiku-Led Coalition Adopts ADC to Unseat Tinubu in 2027

A coalition of opposition politicians led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its new political platform ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The decision was reached after hours of closed-door deliberations that extended into early Wednesday morning. The move comes after delays by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in registering the coalition’s initial choice — the All Democratic Alliance (ADA).

To steer the coalition for now, key positions were handed to notable political figures: former Senate President David Mark was named interim national chairperson, former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola was picked as national secretary, while ex-Minister of Youth and Sports Bolaji Abdullahi was announced as the spokesperson.

Umar Ardo, one of the coalition leaders, said the group hasn’t abandoned plans to get ADA registered. INEC had acknowledged their application on June 27, eight days after it was submitted.

Until then, the ADC will serve as the vehicle for political coordination and mobilisation across the country, with Senator Mark expected to oversee the transition process.

The coalition brings together a long list of familiar names: Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Nasir El-Rufai, Bukola Saraki, Rotimi Amaechi, Abubakar Malami, and others — many of whom once belonged to rival camps but are now working together to remove the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from power.

This latest alliance mirrors the formation of the APC itself, which in 2013 emerged from a merger of opposition parties and eventually defeated the PDP in 2015. Whether history will repeat itself in 2027 remains to be seen.
