Muhammad Habib Husaini, a student at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, has made an inspiring breakthrough in assistive technology with the creation of a smart glove that converts sign language into audible speech.
Currently studying Computer and Communication Engineering, Habib developed the innovative NHED Smart Glove to bridge the communication gap for individuals with hearing and speech disabilities.
The smart glove functions by using pressure sensors to track hand gestures. These movements are interpreted through an ESP32 microcontroller, which then sends the data to an SD card module. The system generates audio output in real time, effectively translating signs into spoken language.
Remarkably, Habib constructed the device entirely from locally sourced components, showcasing both ingenuity and resourcefulness.
Speaking on the significance of the project, Habib described it as more than a technical milestone it is a mission to enhance inclusive communication.
“This glove is more than a piece of technology,” Habib said. “With the NHED Smart Glove, we are not just building a device; we are also restoring dignity and bridging the gaps in communication.”
Designed to be a cost-effective alternative to high-end assistive devices, the NHED Smart Glove holds promise for broader accessibility within Nigeria and potentially beyond its borders.
