Truck Ploughs Into Taraba Market, Many Feared Dead

A road accident occurred on Saturday at Mile 6 Market in Jalingo, Taraba State, when a tipper truck loaded with shaft sand lost control and rammed into a crowd of traders and shoppers.

According to security analyst and counter-insurgency expert in the Lake Chad region, Zagazola Makama, “The impact of the crash was devastating. The scene was chaotic with multiple bodies on the ground and several others battling for their lives.”

Zagazola learnt that the incident, which happened around midday, caused multiple deaths and injuries. The exact number of casualties is yet to be confirmed as emergency workers continue rescue operations and assess the scene.

Sources said the truck was speeding when one of its front tyres burst, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle veered into the market area, knocking down people and structures.

“It happened so fast,” said Musa Ibrahim, a local vendor. “The truck was on speed and after the tyre burst, the driver couldn’t control it. It just rammed into the crowd.”

Security operatives and medical personnel took the injured to nearby hospitals. The bodies of the deceased have also been recovered. Efforts are ongoing to identify the victims and notify their families.

Makama added, “The recurring tragedies on our roads point to a systemic failure in enforcing traffic regulations and vehicle maintenance standards. We cannot afford to ignore these lapses any longer.”

The driver of the truck has been arrested and is in custody as investigations continue.
