Rurum Commends Air Force Institute, Pledges Support
The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Air Force, Honourable Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, has acknowledged the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), Kaduna, for its work in technological training and education.
Rurum spoke on Monday, June 30, during an oversight visit by the House Committee to AFIT. The delegation was received by the AFIT Commandant, Air Vice Marshal Sani Labaran Rabe.
“The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Honourable Tajudeen Abbas, directed us to visit critical Air Force institutions like AFIT to assess their progress and provide support where necessary,” Rurum said.
He noted AFIT’s role in training both military and civilian personnel. “We are impressed by the level of technological advancement and the role AFIT is playing in training Nigerians and other nationals,” he said. “We will continue to support the Institute, especially in ensuring timely budgetary allocation to enhance its technical capabilities.”
A statement by Wing Commander Bassey Ibiang Okon, Director of Public Relations at AFIT, said the visit also served as a return to the institution for the Committee’s Deputy Chairman, Air Vice Marshal Rufus Ojuawo (rtd), who was received by AFIT personnel.
During the visit, the lawmakers were told that AFIT had saved the country over ₦25 billion in a single three-month training cycle. They also learned that 25 Nigerian Army personnel had recently completed an aerospace course at the institution free of charge, following a tuition waiver approved by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal HB Abubakar.
In his address, AVM Rabe thanked the Committee for the visit and highlighted increased interest in the institution.
He said this was due to “zero tolerance for industrial action, a healthy student-to-lecturer ratio, and a secure learning environment.”
He urged the lawmakers to consider increasing funding. “We need more departments and facilities to meet the rising demand for admission. Many Nigerians want to study here because of the stability and quality we offer,” he said.
