Open Defecation Drops in Kano as More Areas Get Certified
Kano State has recorded progress in sanitation efforts as 20 additional local government areas have been certified as Open Defecation Free (ODF), increasing the total number of ODF-certified LGAs in the state to 26.
The development was announced at a ceremony attended by government officials and development partners. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf was presented with an award for his role in the Open Defecation Free campaign.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammad, Governor Yusuf expressed hope that the remaining local governments would also meet the required standards.
“Kano State would soon be an Open Defecation Free State,” Governor Yusuf said.
Represented by his Deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, the governor said his administration would continue to provide toilets and sanitation materials across communities.
“We are aggressively pursuing this campaign by providing latrines and promoting hygiene awareness, especially in rural areas,” the statement added.
The governor also noted that six more local government areas are making notable progress and are close to being certified.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr. Richard Pheelangwah, discussed the broader importance of the Clean Nigeria Campaign.
“The Clean Nigeria Campaign is part of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he noted.
“We urge all state governments to demonstrate strong political will and support towards eliminating open defecation across the country.”
The Kano State Commissioner for Rural and Community Development, Hon. Abdulkadir Abdussalam, said the achievement reflects the efforts made by the current administration.
“The government of Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf is winning the campaign on open defecation, and the results are visible,” he said.
In his remarks, the Kano State Commissioner of Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran, said the campaign is already yielding positive results in the health sector.
“The reduction in cases of waterborne diseases in Kano is directly linked to the successes recorded in the Open Defecation Campaign,” Dr. Labaran stated.
The certification indicates that over 95 percent of residents in the newly certified local governments now use proper toilet facilities. The campaign seeks to end open defecation due to its health and environmental impacts.
Certificates were presented to the 20 newly certified LGAs during the event.
