NDLEA Hosts Traditional Boxing Match to Tackle Drug Abuse in Kano
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Kano Strategic Command, in partnership with Mazaje Trado, on Wednesday hosted a traditional Dambe competition as part of activities to mark the United Nations International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
Held at an open arena in Kano, the event attracted over 3,000 spectators, with more joining virtually. The contest aimed to raise awareness about drug abuse, particularly among young people.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Commander Narcotics Dahiru Yahaya Lawal, who represented the NDLEA Strategic Commander, CN AI Ahmad, stressed the need to prioritize prevention in addressing drug abuse.
“Prevention is key,” Lawal said. “We must invest in it because the consequences of substance abuse are devastating—not just to individuals but to families and communities.”
Dambe fighters took part in the competition, reflecting the theme of this year’s observance: “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention.”
The NDLEA presented trophies and a cash prize of ₦500,000 to the winners. Organizers said the reward was meant to encourage young people to follow positive and productive paths.
Chairman of Mazaje Trado, Bashir Muhammad Danliti, said, “We sincerely appreciate the NDLEA under the leadership of CN AI Ahmad. This approach of using our traditional sports to educate and unite people around the fight against drugs is working. We will continue to support this effort.”
The event had in attendance representatives from security agencies, civil society organizations, and the Kano State Censorship Board. Executive Secretary Alhaji Abba Almustapha and others pledged their support for efforts to reduce drug use.
In a statement by NDLEA Public Relations Officer Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, the agency said it would continue using sports and cultural activities to promote awareness and prevention of drug abuse in Kano and elsewhere.
“This is more than a celebration,” the statement noted. “It’s a message to our communities: together, we can create a healthier, drug-free society.”
