Atiku Abubakar: I’ll Go Back to University After Politics Retirement

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar says he plans to return to university after retiring from politics, a decision he says reflects his long-standing commitment to education.

Speaking on Sunday in Abuja at the graduation and prize-giving ceremony of Pacesetters’ Schools Abuja, where 205 students graduated, Atiku said education has played a key role in shaping his life.

“I thank the Chairman for inviting me to this historic event, which aligns with my passion for education. Even in retirement, I look forward to returning to university,” he said.

Atiku, who founded the American University of Nigeria (AUN), said his own journey in education started with a nursery and primary school, then a secondary school, and eventually a university. He noted, “There’s no better investment than education, as it empowers individuals to become engineers, doctors, or whatever profession they choose.”

He praised the founder of Pacesetters’ Schools, Barrister Kenneth Imansuangbon, for “investing in human development,” urging the school to consider expanding into the university level.

Describing education as the “master key” to Nigeria’s development, Atiku said, “It is crucial for national unity, stability, and development. An educated citizenry is less prone to being manipulated by divisive elements.”

He also called for improved funding of education and the introduction of a curriculum that supports entrepreneurship.

Recalling a personal experience, Atiku shared how, in 1961, American teachers from the US Peace Corps were posted to his secondary school in Northern Nigeria after the exit of British teachers. He said this shaped his academic path and later influenced his decision to adopt an American-style curriculum in his schools.

“I congratulate the graduating students, and I’m thrilled to see some of my own graduates among them,” he said.

In his remarks, Barrister Imansuangbon said the goal of Pacesetters’ Schools is to nurture independent-minded individuals who can create their own paths in life.

“We aim to refine our students and equip them with the skills necessary to make a positive impact in society,” he said.
