ASUU Elects Chris Piwuna as New President

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Professor Chris Piwuna as its new president.
Professor Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist and Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, takes over from Professor Victor Osodeke, a soil science expert from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike.
His emergence followed a keenly contested election held during the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress in Benin City on Sunday. He defeated Professor Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi.
Piwuna’s assumption of office comes amidst widespread speculations of industrial action following issues surrounding the sharing formula of the Earned Academic Allowances recently released by the Federal Government of Nigeria, brain drain, among others.
