Lagos State Government disburses N130 billion in social support, benefiting 18.5 million residents
The Lagos State Government has disclosed that it disbursed a total of N130 billion in social support initiatives over the past year, directly benefiting more than 18.5 million residents.
The announcement was made by Mr. Ope George, the Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held on Wednesday at Alausa, Ikeja.
The briefing, held in commemoration of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s ongoing second-term stewardship, served as an account by his cabinet.
Social support interventions
According to George, the interventions include the transportation subsidy allowance introduced after the removal of the fuel subsidy, as well as the “Ounje Eko” food subsidy programme, among others.
“We ensured that these interventions were coordinated and targeted to cushion the economic pressures on Lagos residents. Given the number of people at various locations, it’s safe to say it was a successful intervention.
“The Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration remains firmly committed to balanced and sustainable development that directly improves the lives of our people,” he said.
Budget performance and revenue growth
The commissioner emphasized that the well-being of residents remained a priority, noting that the 2024 budget performance had reached 87%, with revenue rising to N2.968 trillion.
“The state achieved an 87% budget performance in 2024, and a non-expenditure framework review was conducted to enable more equitable and impact-driven resource distribution,” he said.
He further highlighted that Lagos State’s total revenue had significantly increased, rising from N2.08 trillion in 2024 to N2.968 trillion in 2025, a growth attributed to improved planning and fiscal discipline.
“This growth is evident in the widespread infrastructural projects currently underway across the state,” he added.
2025 budget overview
The commissioner also outlined that the 2025 budget of N3.366 trillion comprises a total revenue projection of N2.968 trillion, with recurrent expenditure set at N1.295 trillion and capital expenditure at N2.071 trillion.
Highlighting the ministry’s achievements beyond fiscal figures, George reported that under the Resilience Office, the ministry created 100 direct green jobs and 1,500 indirect ones.
“Our approach is inclusive and future-focused, supporting over 5,000 Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) through climate-resilient and circular business models.”
The Commissioner explained that by integrating climate resilience into entrepreneurship, we’re not only supporting livelihoods but building a sustainable Lagos.
