Gov Okpebholo Orders Probe into Alleged DSS Attack on Journalists

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has called for an investigation into the alleged assault on journalists by a Department of State Services (DSS) official during Monday’s Edo Governorship Election Tribunal at the High Court in Benin.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, commended the governor’s swift response to the incident, describing it as a firm stand against attacks on media practitioners.

In a joint statement by its chairman, Festus Alenkhe, and secretary, Andy Egbon, the NUJ expressed gratitude for the governor’s prompt intervention.

“We are deeply grateful to Governor Okpebholo for his prompt intervention, which has sent a strong message that attacks on journalists will not be tolerated in Edo State,” the statement read.

The NUJ further highlighted the governor’s directive for a thorough investigation into the incident, urging stakeholders to foster respect for media practitioners.

“We urge all stakeholders to join hands with Governor Okpebholo in promoting a culture of respect for the media and the fundamental rights of journalists.

“His actions align with the principles of democracy and the rule of law,” the union stated.

The NUJ also pledged its support for the governor’s efforts to create a safe and enabling environment for journalists in the state.
