NFVCB Crackdown: Releasing unclassified skits, music videos now punishable offense

The National Films and Videos Censors Board (NFVCB) has reiterated its stance that releasing skits, films, or music videos without obtaining classification from the Board is a punishable offense.

This announcement underscores the Board’s commitment to ensuring that audiovisual content is suitable for all audiences, particularly protecting children from inappropriate material.

In a statement issued by the NFVCB’s Executive Director, Shaibu Husseini, the Board highlighted its classification system, which assigns age ratings and content advisories to help families make informed viewing choices.

โ€œIt is also an offence to distribute or exhibit any film or video content including skits and musical videos on any platform without recourse to the National Film and Video Censors Board for classification,โ€ Husseini emphasized.

The NFVCB first announced in May its intention to extend these classification requirements to skits and music videos, reflecting the growing influence of digital content.

Husseini further warned that the Board is collaborating with security agencies to identify and prosecute those who distribute unclassified material.

โ€œWe are collaborating with relevant security agencies to track the individuals and production companies involved, and will stop at nothing to make sure they face the full wrath of the law,โ€ he said.

In addition, the NFVCB condemned the promotion and distribution of same-sex content on social media, reminding filmmakers and content creators that public exhibition of same-sex relationships is illegal in Nigeria.

The Board’s stringent measures are aimed at maintaining cultural values and ensuring that content accessible to the public aligns with national standards and laws.
