A two-storey building in the Aguda- Surulere area of Lagos State, partially collapsed on Wednesday due to heavy rainfall.
The building located at 70, Adetola Street, collapsed from the front of its side.
NewsNGR gathered that the affected building had been cordoned off to avert a secondary incident.
Confirming the incident, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said post-disaster assessment of the incident scene is ongoing.
He said that upon receiving a distress call, the agency’s response team was deployed to the scene.
“In its swift and prompt response to emergencies, the Agency deployed its Response Team at Onipanu Base to the scene of the incident.
“Consequent upon the arrival of the response team at the incident scene, it was discovered that a residential cum commercial two-storey building partially collapsed from the front side of the structure. The building comprises of 6 flats and 8 shops. The 6 flats has 3 units of 5 bedroom and 3 units of 3 bedroom flats.
“Further investigation gathered at the incident scene revealed that the incident occurred in the early hours of today due to the heavy downpour,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
According to him, there was no record of casualties as the occupants were able to escape before the collapse.
“Fortunately, nobody was trapped and no injuries sustained because the distressed building gave signs and the occupants quickly evacuated unscathed,” the LASEMA boss stated.
Emergency responders at the scene are LASEMA Response Team, Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps (LNSC), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Safety Commission, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
