Sunshine Stars ball boy Taiye Dosunmu who was shot during an attack on the team bus on Thursday, is now in stable condition, just as other members of the team who were injured during the attack, The PUNCH reports.

Some unknown gunmen on Thursday afternoon attacked the team along the Benin-Ore Expressway, on their way to honour the Nigeria Premier Football League match-day 13 game against Bendel Insurance.

Dosunmu was pictured with a gunshot wound in the stomach on a hospital bed. Some players, the team manager Seun Betiku, and other officials were also reportedly injured in the attack.

Media officer of the team, Michael Akintunde, confirmed the incident, in a statement.

“It saddens our hearts to inform Nigerians, especially football lovers, that our team was attacked along the Ore-Benin Expressway to honour an elite league tie, against Insurance of Benin, scheduled for this weekend.

“Our ball boy (Dosunmu) was shot in the horrible attack, our team manager and other club officials, including players, are seriously injured.

“It took the intervention of officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps that helped rescue the injured officials and the shot individual to a nearby hospital.”

Akintunde also confirmed that Dosunmu was already responding to treatment and has been transferred to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital.

Police Public Relations Officer of the Ondo State Police Command, Funmilayo Odunlami, said the attack was not reported at the police station in the state.

“When I heard about the incident, I called the DPP of the Ore Division and he told me no incident of such was reported at the station. Maybe it didn’t happen in Ondo State,” she said.

Teams like Kano Pillars, Akwa United, Rivers United, Adamawa United, Enyimba and others have been previously attacked by gunmen on their way to and from league games.

Akwa United were attacked along Ogoni in Rivers State last season. Adamawa United’s incident in 2021 saw the players robbed, while their driver was also abducted before he was released.
