In 1999, the introduction of Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace gave fans of the franchise another instantly iconic Star Wars villain, but his demise in the film's culminating lightsaber duel left many wanting more from the character. In 2001, the Dark Horse comic book anthology Star Wars Tales featured an early Maul resurrection story, in the process delivering a stunning Extended Universe Darth Vader moment.
