A veteran singer, Zaaki Azzay, has said that the oft-repeated statement that Tiv men give out their wives to entertain their guests is false.
He was reacting to a statement by a Big Brother Naija housemate (All Stars edition), Venita Akpofure, who said on the show that Tiv men usually give out their wives for entertainment.
Speaking in an interview with Sunday Scoop, Azzay, who is a Tiv man from Benue State, said, “It’s not the first time I have heard people say that as a joke. I even went as far as investigating it when I was much younger. I asked questions from my parents, grandparents, friends and relatives, and they all confirmed that nothing like that ever existed. Also, they don’t even know how it came about.
“This case is more serious because Venita Akpofure’s ex-husband (Terna Tarka) is from Benue State, and she made the statement on one of the most viewed programmes in Nigeria and beyond, especially among the youth.”
He added, “Big Brother should apologise to the Tiv people in Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau, Taraba, and Adamawa states. Big Brother should also revisit its existing guidelines to prevent such utterances from reoccurring.
In a similar vein, Dickson Tarkighir, the member representing Makurdi/Guma Federal Constituency of Benue State in the House of Representatives, threatened to file a lawsuit against Venita and the organisers of the reality show.
