Brian Helgeland spills some details on his failed L.A. Confidential 2 pitch. James Ellroy’s hard-boiled novel about the 1950s LAPD was adapted into a 1997 film starring Russell Crowe, Kevin Spacey, Guy Pearce and Kim Basinger. Directed by Curtis Hanson, the acclaimed movie went on to be nominated for nine Oscars including Best Picture, and won Basinger an award for Best Supporting Actress. It wasn’t until years later that plans for a sequel were set in motion, with Chadwick Boseman set to star, but those plans went by the wayside after Warner Bros. passed and Boseman tragically died.
