While Avatar: The Way of Water’s story worked well, Avatar 3 could make the Avatar sequel even more effective by flipping its plot for the franchise’s next outing. Avatar 3 has a tough act to follow. Not only did Avatar: The Way of Water break a slew of box office records upon its arrival in cinemas, but the sequel also proved once and for all that the original Avatar was as big a cultural moment as its financial performance suggested. In the years after Avatar arrived, it was tough to tell whether co-writer/director James Cameron’s return to Pandora would be met with the same rapturous reception that the original movie enjoyed.
