Man remanded for firearms possession

A 37-year-old man, Shina Akanbi, has been arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court sitting in Yaba, Lagos State, for unlawful possession of firearms during the presidential and National Assembly elections in the Aguda area of Lagos State.

Akanbi, who appeared before Magistrate Adeola Olatunbosun, is facing one- count bordering on unlawful possession of firearms and disorderly conduct during the elections.

The police prosecutor, Rita Momoh, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on January 25, 2023.

The charge read, “That you, Shina Akanbi, and others still at large, on February 25, 2023, around 11am at Aguda, Surulere, Lagos State, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did commit felony to wit unlawful possession of firearms and disorderly conduct at the elections and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 51 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2015.”

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Magistrate Olatunbosun granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500.000 with two responsible sureties in like sum.

 She ordered that Akanbi be remanded in prison until his bail terms had been fulfilled.

 The case was adjourned till April 12, 2023.
