Chloé Zhao's Dracula movie is still in development, the writer/director confirms. After the failure of 2017's The Mummy led Universal to scrap plans for a shared Dark Universe franchise, the studio shifted focus to standalone auteur-driven monster movies, with Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man being the first example of this approach, which was a big box office success. The following year, a new Dracula movie was announced to be in development from Zhao, who won an Oscar for directing Nomadland and also helmed the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie Eternals.
