While the Back to the Future trilogy is hardly historically accurate, there is one bizarre Back to the Future Part III joke that finds its basis in real-life events. The Back to the Future franchise is not particularly grounded. As far as sci-fi movies featuring time travel go, the events of Back to the Future might be marginally less absurd than the adventures of Bill and Ted, but they are still a lot less plausible and grounded than the more self-serious Terminator franchise. As such, historical anachronisms and scientific inaccuracies abound throughout the trilogy.
