Schmigadoon! Season 2 Release Date & First-Look Photos Revealed

Schmigadoon! season 2 now has a premiere date and photos that gives the first look at the new season. The musical comedy television series starring Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key debuted season 1 on Apple TV+ in 2021, with Strong and Key playing Melissa and Josh, who go on a backpacking trip to repair their deteriorating relationship, only to end up trapped in the eponymous musical town. Everyone and everything in the town is in the style of a classical musical, with characters breaking into song and elaborate dance numbers at any given moment. Melissa and Josh quickly learn that the only way to escape the town is to fall in love again. Scoring largely positive reviews from critics and audiences alike, Schmigadoon! earned a season 2 renewal in mid 2022.

Apple TV+ has announced Schmigadoon! season 2 will premiere on April 7, with co-creator and executive producer Cinco Paul sharing first-look photos on Twitter shortly after the announcement.

The first-look photos show that instead of Schmigadoon, season 2 will take place in Schmicago, a parody of the musical Chicago. Strong and Key can be seen reprising their roles of Melissa and Josh as they are welcomed to Schmicago in one photo, while a different photo shows that they have changed into stylish clothing to fit into the new setting. Dove Cameron looks to be doing a version of the famous “All That Jazz” song from Chicago, while Titus Burgess makes his series debut in a sparkling black suit.

Schmigadoon season 1 ended with Melissa and Josh falling in love again, yet when they crossed the bridge, they were unable to leave the musical town. The show will pivot to parodying Chicago and other famous musical of the 1960s and 1970s in the setting of Schmicago, which was confirmed by the Schmigadoon! season 2 renewal. Strong, Key, and Cameron are among many other actors from season 1 who are returning, as well as Ariana DeBose, Kristin Chenoweth, Aaron Tveit, Alan Cumming, Jaime Camil, and Martin Short. In addition to Burgess, In The Heights‘ Patrick Page joins the cast as a series regular.

Season 2 will feature new original musical numbers that will fit the style of Chicago and the others ’60s and ’70s musicals being parodied. Specific plot details have not been shared, but Melissa and Josh will presumably still be trying to find their way home, and will try to figure out why falling in love again didn’t do the trick. The new Schmigadoon! songs and the updated setting and tone for season 2 seemingly indicates that the cast from season 1 outside of Strong and Key will be playing new characters this time around. The first-look photos tease this with the stark difference between the farmer’s daughter Cameron played in season 1 as opposed to the nightclub singer she appears to be playing now.

After waiting for nearly two years, it is exciting to see the story of Schmigadoon! continue, especially after the season 1 cliffhanger. From fans of Strong and Key’s comedy sketches, to Broadway enthusiasts who have followed the work of Chenoweth and Tveit for years, the series already established widespread appeal in season 1. The exciting new additions to the cast, along with the new setting and musical tone, look to increase the widespread appeal even further for Schmigadoon! season 2. The comedy, delightful musical numbers, and the story of a couple rekindling their love will continue when Schmigadoon! season 2 premieres on April 7 on Apple TV+.
