Spoilers for Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 8: Jojolion aheadOne of the most important elements of the story of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure‘s eighth installment, Jojolion, is a strange fruit known as the Locacaca fruit. But what makes the Locacaca so special, and what role might it play going forward?
In JoJo’s Biazarre Adventure Part 8: Jojolion, the Locacaca (sometimes transliterated as “rokakaka”) is a rare fruit with some incredible powers at its disposal. Locacaca are first mentioned in chapter 32, in the possession of a villainous “Rock Human” named Yagiyama. Yagiyama is defeated and the fruit sinks into the ocean, but this inspires Josuke to investigate the fruit and find out what it is. The fruit itself is strange-looking, covered in pointed bumps and vaguely resembling a very large Lychee.
When Josuke finds a fruit in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure and watches someone eat it, he sees that the old man regrows a missing leg, but then has his eyes turn to stone. The fruit works on an “Equivalent Exchange” principle, giving something while taking something of equal value away, although how that value is determined remains a mystery. Additional research allows them to discover that the Locacaca was native to Papua New Guinea, and was considered exceptionally rare and miraculous. They are then able to track the fruit down to its local source, and a Locacaca is eventually found growing on a branch grafted to a tree on Higashikata property. This one is different, however–a so-called “New Locacaca” fruit. The New Locacaca fruit allows for two different people to be involved, one who gains and one who loses. This turns out to have been instrumental in how Josuke came to be in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and his destiny is closely tied to the Locacaca as a result.
The Locacaca fruit are kept secret, smuggled, and sold around the world by Jobin Higashikata using the family’s fruit company as cover. However, over the course of Jojolion, all the Locacaca fruits and trees that are known to exist have been destroyed. Characters speculate that the fruit may still exist somewhere on tropical islands far to the south of Japan, although they have no way to know for sure. This is where the yet-to-be-released part 9 comes in. The JOJOLands, as it has been revealed to be titled, is in fact set on a subtropical island, and has featured the ocean and sailboats prominently in promotional material. Many fans believe that part 9 will be dedicated to rediscovering the Locacaca, as there are several plot threads, such as Holly Joestar-Kira’s illness, which still need to be dealt with. Holly is also said to be the daughter of the part 8 universe’s Joseph Joestar, and Part 9’s protagonist is similarly descended from Joseph.
While nothing has yet been confirmed, it’s looking a lot like the Locacaca may still have an important role to play in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.
