A new Cocaine Bear teaser hypes the drug-fueled bear’s enhanced physical abilities that far surpass those of a regular bear. Directed by Elizabeth Banks from a script written by Jimmy Warden, Cocaine Bear is an upcoming darkly comedic thriller that adapts a larger-than-life true story. The film follows an array of people, including tourists, cops, criminals, and teenagers as they encounter a 500-pound black bear that has ingested a large amount of cocaine. As has already been teased in trailers and images, the cocaine ends up sending the bear on a murderous rampage.
After the violent nature of the titular bear was first unveiled in the first trailer last month, the official Cocaine Bear Twitter account has now released another teaser highlighting the creature’s enhanced abilities while under the influence.
In contrast to a regular black bear, which can smell things up to a mile away, climb at 4 feet per second, and run at around 30mph, the Cocaine Bear in the film can “smell everything,” climb at 100 feet per second, and hit 75mph at full tilt. It certainly looks like the movie’s human characters don’t stand much of a chance.
After starring in movies like The Hunger Games, Pitch Perfect, The Next Three Days, and Magic Mike XXL, Banks makes her directorial debut with Cocaine Bear. The film is based on the true story of a real American black bear in Georgia who ingested a large duffel bag’s worth of cocaine in the year 1985. While the real bear didn’t go on a drug-fueled murderous rampage and instead died of an overdose, Cocaine Bear imagines a very different turn of events where the drugs turn the animal into a ravenous killing machine. The real bear is believed to have ingested the drugs after a drug smuggler dumped the substance from his small plane before then falling to his death. From the Cocaine Bear trailer, it looks like the film is maintaining this part of the true story.
While the titular bear is created using visual effects, Cocaine Bear features an impressive array of actors to bring the movie’s colorful cast of characters to life. The late Ray Liotta will play a pivotal role in the film as a drug kingpin, the last role he completed before his death earlier last year. He will be joined in Cocaine Bear by a host of other talented actors including Keri Russell, Margo Martindale, Alden Ehrenreich, Matthew Rhys, Kristofer Hivju, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Isiah Whitlock Jr., Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Brooklynn Prince, Scott Seiss, and Ayoola Smart. With the film seemingly guaranteed to feature a relatively high body count, it’s unclear which of these actors’ characters will survive their encounters with the murderous bear.
While Cocaine Bear may be based on a true story, it certainly seems like the production is taking a number of creative liberties to add humor and action to the film. The true story is crazy in its own way, but Banks looks to be turning this up to eleven for the movie, delivering a wacky, violent, and hilarious tale of drug-fueled carnage. Thankfully, audiences don’t have much longer to wait to see Cocaine Bear for themselves, with its release date currently just over a month away.
