Blacktail: How To Beat Baba (Boss Fight)

The Final Boss of Blacktail, who has been tormenting Yaga and kidnapping the village’s children, Baba, is a fearsome enemy. On paper, she should be an easy, motionless boss with a big glowing heart-shaped weak point for the player to shoot at. However, as is typical of the fairytale game, things are not so simple.

A core part of Blacktail’s gameplay is crafting arrows and gathering materials in the middle of combat, as Yaga has a limited inventory that runs out fast. The problem is that there are no resource nodes in Baba’s boss arena, so the player needs to carefully manage their resources in a way that strangely parallels the final boss fight of Scorn.

This restriction adds tension and dramatics to the fight but falls away after Yaga’s first death. After that, a brief cutscene will play, and Yaga will stand back up with full health and infinite ammo in her quiver.

However, even with the buff, this is far from an easy fight. Accordinng to the Youtube channel TheBaldMan, There are three pillars placed around the edge of the boss arena that will constantly spawn small low-level enemies that will swarm Yaga and kill with a thousand cuts. In addition, Blacktail’s disgusting blind snake-worms will periodically pop out of the ground and try to take a bit out of Yaga. And on top of all that, similar to many boss fights from Dark Soul’s Seath the Scaleless to 9-Torg in High on Life, Baba will make a large part of the ground an AOE hazard, with root-tentacles shooting out of the ground to deal a large amount of damage.

All these problems can be overcome. If the player is good at snap-aiming, they can use the two teleport gates on either side of the arena to reposition away from swarming enemies and the AOE. The snake-worms can be killed, and there’s a finite amount of them as well, and with a few Honey Arrows or Crystal Arrows shot at the giant skulls on the Pillars will stop the spawning for a little while.

Like Sonic Frontiers’s Supreme boss, once Blacktail’s Baba’s at 50% health, the fight will transition to phase two and again at 10%. Unlike that fight, however, the only difference is that parts of the edge of the map will spew fire periodically, and a few tougher skeletons will spawn. Nothing changes for the player.
