Prime Video’s A League of Their Own takes inspiration from Penny Marshall’s 1992 movie of the same name in its wide-spanning narrative covering the true story of the Rockford Peaches, who played in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League from 1943-1954. The TV series created by Abbi Jacobson and Will Graham explores the successes and struggles of women in sports during the World War II era with an emphasis on the experiences of Black and LGBTQ+ women.
Among a stellar cast headlined by Jacobson and Chanté Adams, are Molly Ephraim, who portrays Maybelle Fox, who derives from the real-life baseball star Maybelle Blair, and Saidah Arrika Ekulona, who portrays Toni, the mother of Adams’ character Max Chapman. A League of Their Own also features actors D’Arcy Carden, Melanie Field, Roberta Colindrez, Priscilla Delgado, Kelly McCormack, Gbemisola Ikumelo, and Kate Berlant.
Screen Rant interviewed Ephraim and Ekulona about their experiences playing Maybelle and Toni in Prime Video’s A League of Their Own.
Screen Rant: Molly, how did you prepare to take on the role of a baseball player, and what was it like to be part of the story that we see in A League of Their Own?
As Max’s mother, Toni’s role falls outside the baseball field. Saidah, can you describe the fraught relationship Toni has with her daughter and how that reflects the series’ broader themes?
It’s nice to see a show that centers women, and such a diverse group of women. For both of you, how did it feel to work on a show like this that can make so many women feel seen?
In what ways do you hope that this series carries on the legacy of the original movie 30 years later?
What would you both like to see for your characters in season 2?
A League of Their Own evokes the joyful spirit of Penny Marshall’s beloved classic, while widening the lens to tell the story of an entire generation of women who dreamed of playing professional baseball, both in and outside of the AAGPBL. The show follows Carson (Abbi Jacobson) and Max (Chanté Adams) and a new ensemble of sharp and hilarious characters as they carve their paths toward the field, along the way finding their teams and themselves.
