John Wick 4 Runtime Will Be Franchise's Longest Yet, Says Director

As the sequels have continued to grow with each installment, director Chad Stahelski shares that John Wick 4 will be the franchise’s longest movie yet. Stahelski is returning to the helm of the action series he helped launch with 87North Productions co-founder David Leitch, who went on to direct the likes of Deadpool 2, Hobbs & Shaw and Bullet Train. John Wick 4 will mark the first installment in the franchise not penned by creator Chad Stahelski, with John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum‘s Shay Hatten returning to co-write the script with Predators‘ Michael Finch.

Keanu Reeves is once again leading the ensemble cast of new and returning faces for John Wick 4 alongside Laurence Fishburne, Ian McShane, Lance Reddick, Rina Sawayama, Donnie Yen, Shamier Anderson, Bill Skarsgård, Hiroyuki Sanada, Scott Adkins and Clancy Brown. The action fourquel is set to pick up from its predecessor’s ending as Wick is shot and left for dead and rescued by Fishburne’s Bowery King, with the two plotting to go to war against the High Table for their actions against the two. Anticipation continues to grow for John Wick 4 with less than a year remaining until it hits theaters and now the man at the helm is sharing an exciting update about the film.

While speaking with Collider to promote Netflix’s Day Shift, Chad Stahelski offered an update on John Wick 4‘s post-production. In addition to confirming he and the team are in the “final stretch,” the director teased that the upcoming sequel will be the franchise’s longest film yet, though kept mum on exactly how much longer it will be. See what Stahelski said below:

With the first John Wick movie only running for 101 minutes while its follow-ups ran for 122 and 131 minutes, respectively, Stahelski’s tease that John Wick 4 will be the franchise’s longest installment should raise eyebrows amongst fans of the series. Given the director notes that the next chapter will not be “that long” in comparison to the first three films, it seems likely audiences averse to longer runtimes shouldn’t be concerned about it eclipsing a 3-hour runtime or more. However, if to look at the pattern set by the previous installments, it does seem possible that John Wick 4 could clear the two-and-a-half-hour mark, which will either come as appealing to those eager to see plenty of action and more worldbuilding or disappointing for those wanting a more simplified story.

Given the film will be introducing the likes of Donnie Yen, Mortal Kombat‘s Hiroyuki Sanada and It‘s Bill Skarsgård to the fold, amongst others, John Wick 4 being the franchise’s longest movie yet should at least work to better allow its newer characters their time to shine on screen and effect Reeves’ story, in one way or another. Though with the general perogative for sequels being to double down on what works and go bigger and better, a longer runtime should also work to deliver far more of what fans have come to love in the first three films. Only time will tell when John Wick 4 hits theaters on March 24, 2023.
