I Am Groot Show Almost Recycled GOTG Recordings For All Dialogue

I Am Groot executive producers Kristen Lepore and Brad Winderbaum reveal that they had originally planned to recycle Vin Diesel’s Guardians of the Galaxy dialogue instead of recording new lines for the Disney+ series. Diesel’s soft-spoken Groot first appeared on-screen in 2014 in James Gunn’s acclaimed Guardians of the Galaxy. Although the character sacrifices himself at the end of the film, a new, baby version of Groot returns in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 as well as several other MCU movies, including Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Although already a mainstay of some of the MCU’s biggest blockbusters, the character now has his very own show on Disney+. A first for the streaming service, I Am Groot comprises 5 animated shorts of varying lengths, featuring Diesel’s toddler Groot as he interacts with several unusual new characters. Winderbaum has previously explained that I Am Groot takes place after the end credits of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, but before the first post-credits scene in the same film. Although Gunn isn’t directly involved in the writing or directing of I Am Groot, Guardians of the Galaxy regulars Bradley Cooper and Diesel returned to record new dialogue for their roles as Groot and Rocket, respectively.

Now, in a new interview with Collider, Lepore explains that the original plan for I Am Groot didn’t involve Diesel doing any additional dialogue recording at all. As Lepore explains, the original hope was to just pull Diesel’s recordings from the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. As they delved deeper into the series, however, it became clear that each line required its own unique inflection, meaning Diesel was brought in to record all new dialogue. As for Diesel’s performance, Lepore said the actor was ultimately able to give each line “so much personality.” Check out Lepore’s full comment below:

Although Diesel’s character pretty much only ever says “I Am Groot” in Guardians of the Galaxy and his other appearances in the MCU, each line holds a very different meaning depending on the context in which it is said. From the heartfelt to the hilarious, each Groot line actually means more than what the words sound like on the surface. Lepore’s comment that Diesel was needed to give each I Am Groot line the proper inflection comes not long after Gunn himself offered some insight as to how the character’s lines are presented in his scripts, with only those who understand Groot in the world of the films being given his actual lines.

Early reviews for I Am Groot have been overwhelmingly positive, suggesting that bringing Diesel back to record new lines was ultimately the right call. While using Diesel’s lines from Guardians of the Galaxy likely would have worked, at least to some degree, the additional recording sessions allow additional Groot emotions to be brought forth and new emotional layers to be added to the character. With I Am Groot already confirmed to return for season 2, hopefully, Diesel will be brought back once more to give each line-reading that extra dash of personality.
