They retired that distinctive cap after the 2020 season, with the 49ers underperforming since that year and missing the playoffs. But even if he wants to bring it back, he can’t.
The 49ers head coach said on the Murph and Mack podcast that the NFL is not allowing him to wear any of his old hats, as he can only use the new and approved San Francisco hat this season.
“I have beef with him right now,” Shanahan said via Yahoo Sports. “It’s going to be a tough issue. They won’t let me choose my own [hat], They won’t let me wear anything that is a . belong to [previous] years, so I can’t wear like an elder. I have to wear the new one they give this year. Unfortunately, there isn’t one I like to wear. Hopefully, we can find out or wait till Salute to Service. …it’s just deals. I don’t want to work too hard and want a fine or anything, but trust me, I’m nervous about it. ,
Shanahan helped design this specific hat, as he went years without wearing one because he could never find a hat he liked. Therefore, the NFL’s cap rule means more to him than any other coach in the league.
