One of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘s new characters sets up the rumored Okoye Disney+ series. The Black Panther franchise is set to become an even bigger piece of the Marvel Cinematic Universe moving forward. Not only is Black Panther 2 introducing Namor and his underwater kingdom of Talocan (known as Atlantis in the comics), but director Ryan Coogler is working on various spinoffs for Wakandan characters, as well as Ironheart. He is also said to be developing a spinoff for Danai Gurira’s Okoye.
The rumored Black Panther Disney+ spinoff for Okoye will come after she’s continued to rise to prominence in the MCU. Gurira has made her a standout character, with Okoye even seemingly joining the Avengers after Thanos’ snap. There is an expectation that her role will grow further in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Speculation suggests she could become Wakanda’s next ruler or even the MCU’s newest Black Panther. For now, she is leading the Dora Milaje, and it is that portion of Okoye’s life that is expected to be explored in her rumored spinoff show.
Michaela Coel’s Aneka is among the several new characters featured in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘s trailer. She is easy to spot with the bright blue and gold armor she is wearing, such as when she jumps in to seemingly protect Okoye. The blue and gold armor is a match for the Midnight Angels, which is a subgroup of the Dora Milaje. Rumors have swirled that the Midnight Angels and Okoye are the focus of the Black Panther spinoff show, with Danai Gurira’s character likely being part of the team in the past before becoming the leader of the Dora Milaje overall. If the speculation about the Midnight Angels playing a role in Okoye’s show is accurate, then Aneka being one of Black Panther 2‘s new characters can be used to set up that series.
Aneka’s blue armor in Black Panther 2 is starkly different from the red armor the rest of the Dora Milaje have worn in the MCU. The elite team of all-female Wakandan warriors has always been shown to wear red. The colors of clothing are very important in Wakanda, as the different tribes of the great African nation often set themselves apart through their wardrobes. The River Tribe traditionally wears green, while the Panther Tribe wears black in honor of Bast. The Border Tribe is known for its blue clothing, which could indicate Aneka and the Midnight Angels hail from this tribe.
It is more likely that Aneka’s blue Dora Milaje armor is not tied to the Border Tribe and instead a sign of her role in protecting the MCU’s new Black Panther. After all, the Dora Milaje’s red coloring has not been known to connect them to the Mining Tribe. The comics gave the Midnight Angels blue armor as a means to differentiate them as the personal bodyguards of the Black Panther. This should mean that Aneka and any other blue-armored Dora Milaje members should be with T’Challa’s successor in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. But, they could also now be set up to return in Okoye’s spinoff.
