James Gunn Gives Update on Guardians of the Galaxy 3 & Holiday Special

James Gunn has an update on filming schedules for both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. After Gunn’s first MCU film, Guardians of the Galaxy, became an undeniable hit in 2014, the director and writer also became highly in demand. Gunn is currently involved in multiple projects, working in two superhero universe—the MCU and DCEU. His work for the DCEU includes successes like The Suicide Squad and its follow-up HBO Max series, Peacemaker.

Inside the MCU, Gunn is busy working on both Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. With the entire surviving Guardians of the Galaxy cast returning, the team is filming both upcoming projects at the same time, and Gunn has shared that The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will reveal important information that leads into Vol. 3. Gunn has been open on social media about sharing updates on the two projects’ progress and has now teased that the end of filming is coming near.

With all of Gunn’s statements that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will be the current iterations of the Guardians of the Galaxy’s last appearance in the MCU, this news is a bittersweet announcement. Not only will audiences miss these characters if Vol. 3 truly is their final outing in MCU, but the Guardians of the Galaxy cast will likely also miss working together. The cast and Gunn have shown how close they became while making the trilogy, and Gunn even stated that the whole team would leave if Marvel recast Chris Pratt as Star-Lord in response to recent online pushes. Considering how strongly the Guardians of the Galaxy team feels about each other, there are sure to be very emotional end to their shoot later this week.

Still, although the cast’s hard work filming is coming to an end, there are two Guardians of the Galaxy films and the team’s appearance in Thor: Love and Thunder to look forward to. Both The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will introduce new Marvel characters to the MCU, and Gunn has teased that the Disney+ holiday special is some of his best work. While progress continues into post-production, Gunn is sure to also share even more updates.
