Leicester City’s Third Successive Premier League Fixture Has Been Postponed

Leicester have not played a league match since their 1-0 victory over Liverpool on December 28 and their previous two games against Norwich and Everton have been subsequently postponed.

Saturday’s trip to Turf Moor is now off after a string of illnesses and injuries which left Sean Dyche with a depleted Burnley squad. The club, however, are hopeful that Tuesday’s home game against Watford will go ahead.

League rules state that clubs must fulfil games if they have 13 outfield players and one goalkeeper available. It is understood Burnley are under the required amount due to the outbreak and number of injuries.

Burnley had matches against Aston Villa and Everton postponed over the Christmas period but did play on January 2 at Leeds. They were beaten by Championship club Huddersfield in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Leicester were going to travel to Turf Moor without Jamie Vardy, Jonny Evans, Wesley Fofana, Timothy Castagne, Boubakary Soumare, Ricardo Pereira and Ryan Bertrand, who are injured or ill.

Rodgers is also without Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho and Daniel Amartey as the trio are on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations.

On Thursday, however, Rodgers reported that a number of players are returning from injury which means his squad would have fulfilled the amount required.

After the midweek trip to Everton was postponed for the second time, Rodgers defended Leicester after they were accused of exploiting Premier League rules.

He said: “According to the rules, we had eight players. With young players in the FA Cup, but not ready to be playing at a Premier League level.

“Just because you have players, it doesn’t mean they’re ready. The integrity of the league is important.

“We had eight fit senior players. It’s not as if I’m someone who doesn’t play young players. I’ve put them in if I feel they’re ready.

“If I don’t put them in, I don’t think they’re ready from a football or mental aspect. And I don’t want to curtail the career of a young player. We have to put in our squad for every game, and where they’re at from a medical perspective.

“This week has given us a chance to recover the players. We’re still short but we want to play football. Hopefully we can have a run of games.”

Leicester are scheduled to play Tottenham at home on Wednesday night.
