Emi Martinez Has Explained The Chat Amongst Aston Villa’s Squad This Past Week Involving Signing Coutinho

The Champions League winner penned a loan deal from Barcelona for the remainder of the season and is in line to make his Aston Villa debut against Manchester United on Saturday (5.30pm kick-off).

Coutinho has trained alongside his new teammates for the past few days and, offering an insight into what’s been said amongst the group, Martinez has detailed what needs to be done to get the best out of the little Brazilian.

“Everyone knows him,” Martinez told Villa TV . “He’s a great talent. He’s been at Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Liverpool and, like I say, it says how good he is.

“He’s a lovely lad as well, South American, who will help us in that final third.

“He’s got all of the qualities and the lads have been speaking, we need to find his feet and he will do the rest.

“He won’t have a problem (settling in). He’s lived in Liverpool before, knows the weather and Premier League. Like I said, just give him the ball in nice areas and he will help us a lot.”

Martinez, meanwhile, cut a frustrated figure in his sit-down at Bodymoor Heath, still reeling from Villa’s narrow FA Cup defeat to United on Monday night.

“I’m still frustrated to be honest,” he said. “I thought we performed really well. We didn’t start the game how we wanted. It was obviously a great delivery from Fred and, going down 1-0 at Old Trafford, it was always going to be tough.

“But I thought the reaction from everyone was really good and we created chances. Ollie hit the crossbar and we had a few chances in the first half where at least one should have gone in.

“In the second half, I can’t remember too many shots from Man United. We were on top of them. We had two disallowed goals, one I’m not sure why it was disallowed.

“Then, later on in the game, my centre-back was bleeding in the box and I don’t know how that wasn’t a penalty. It’s been difficult the last few games for us but we’re in a good place and we want to get that win in front of our fans on Saturday.”

Saturday’s home clash against Ralf Rangnick’s side will be Villa’s first match in B6 since Boxing Day, with 19 games remaining from now until the end of the season.

On the second half of the campaign, Martinez added: “The gaffer gives us a really good game plan every single game. We try to execute it against the best teams in the world, like Chelsea, Man United… But we showed how we can play face-to-face against both teams but, especially at Villa Park, we’re going to go for it. We’re not going for a draw, we’re going for a win.

“It’s kind of like revenge because everyone felt so sad after the game. When you look at the stats after the game, the lads ran over 10k, every single player and, obviously, I’m really proud because I see how much they were running, how much effort they put in and the FA Cup meant a lot to us. We wanted to go on a really good run.

“We need to concentrate on the league now and we want to have a really good second half of the season.

“It’s our 20th game, first game in the second round of the season… It’s at Villa Park against Man United who we played four days ago and played well at Old Trafford. We’re going to go for the win.

“We’re all disappointed (13th-place), we know where we have to improve, we know what we have to do and, I can say that on Saturday, it’s a massive opportunity for us to have a great second half of the season.”
