2,560 passports unclaimed in Calabar NIS office

At least 2,560 passports have remained uncollected at the state headquarters of the Nigeria Immigration Service in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

This was disclosed by the Comptroller of the state command of the NIS, Simbabi Baikie during a chat with journalists in his office in Calabar on Tuesday.

He said, “2,560 passports have not been collected, some dating back to 2019. Applicants come and apply but they don’t come back to collect the passports.”

Passport Control Officer and Deputy Comptroller of Immigration, Clementina Ogbudu, confirmed the figure, adding that after five years, the passports wouldexpire.

Baikie, who assumed duties in July last year, said the command needed vehicles as well as “patrol boats to patrol the maritime boundary,” which he described as large.

He said the state headquarters of the command needed to be relocated because the “space is grossly inadequate.”

“We need to secure 33.4 hectares of land for the new state headquarters. We have contacted the state government,” the NIS boss added.

He said land has been acquired to construct its own jetty in Calabar South.

Bailie also disclosed that since he assumed duties, officers in the command had been undergoing training to boost their capacity.

Bailie further noted that an illegal immigrant from Cameroon was deported.
