Rio Ferdinand And Michael Owen Have Agreed That Mohamed Salah Was An Average Finisher When At Chelsea

Salah, 29, has gone on to become arguably the best player in the world based on current form after a turbulent start to his career and this was yet again demonstrated against AC Milan on Tuesday night.

With the Reds being one down on the night against Rossoneri courtesy of a goal scored by ex-Blues academy graduate Fikayo Tomori, the Egyptian was there to bail his side out seven minutes after Jurgen Klopp’s side fell behind in the Italian city.

That goal, which was down to good positioning and anticipation, meant that the winger has now registered seven Champions League goals already this season in only six appearances.

Who would have thought that the 29-year-old would become this ruthless in front of goal, especially after what he showcased in west London, scoring only two Premier League goals in the 13 starts he was afforded at the time across two seasons by Jose Mourinho.

He registered an underwhelming goals per 90 minute rate in his first season in the top flight of English football of just 0.36, which is a stark comparison to the 0.87 rate that Salah has registered so far this season in the EPL, as per

The question of what went wrong at Chelsea for Salah has always been one that not many have been able to answer but Ferdinand and Owen pointed to an ‘average’ trait that he had early on in his career to explain why things didn’t blossom in the way they could have if the west Londoners were more patient with the player in question.

When discussing Salah’s rise to becoming a world beater, Ferdinand kicked off the conversation on BT Sport’s goals show on Tuesday night by saying: “He obviously went to Chelsea and didn’t really set the world alight and that’s why he had to go on to find a new pathway to find the level he’s at now.

“You look at the Messi’s and the Ronaldo’s, you look at the Haalands’s the Mbappe’s, they’re guys you immediately go they’re superstars, they’re going to be superstars.

“With him it wasn’t really that from the beginning but the way he’s grown and developed into this player who’s deciding games at will. 20 goals before December is an absolute joke, it’s out of order.”

Owen then added: “We’ve seen him almost learning on the job. He was a poor finisher, an average finisher, early in his career at Chelsea and he’s just got better and better and better.

“That for me is repetition. Still has the instinct side, which I think he could get better on actually. I don’t think he’s got great movement in terms of nicking across a defender at the near post and things like that.

“But, his hardcore finishing has just improved and that is down to repetition on my eyes.”

With Salah’s contract still up in the air, Liverpool’s hierarchy need to act quickly on tying down a player that is simply irreplaceable to them, otherwise other clubs could pounce on the uncertainty, with Didier Drogba doing his best to convince his African compatriot to make a stunning Stamford Bridge return.
