Concern as vaccinated participant tests positive, organisers trace contacts

A participant at the launching of a five-year National Drug Control Master Plan to address drug problem and its associated consequences in Nigeria has tested positive for COVID-19.

The development was said to have thrown other participants that attended the Monday event into panic.

The person, who was said to have been fully vaccinated, tested positive on Tuesday evening, 24 hours after the event was held at Nigerian Air Force Conference Centre in Abuja.

The launching of the NDCMP was held in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime to cover the period between 2021 and 2025.

The event was attended by dignitaries including  the Country Representative of UNODC, Oliver Stolpe; Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Sunday Dare; and Minister of Women Affairs, Pauline Talle.

Am e-mail sent to participants by the Project Officer of UNODC, WU Shiyin William, confirmed the COVID-19 case.

It read, “Dear participants. Hope this email finds you well. We seize this opportunity to thank you for your active participation at the launch of the National Drug Control Master Plan which was held at NAF Conference Centre on December 6, 2021, in Abuja.

“Whilst appreciating your efforts that led to this important event, we wish to inform you that we have a positive case of COVID-19 from the event. The person, who is fully vaccinated, tested positive yesterday (Tuesday) evening. He is doing well.

“We wish to let you know that we have identified all the persons with whom this newly identified covid-19 positive member had been in close contact on that day of the event, and we have informed all of them to take necessary precautionary measures.

“However, we also humbly advise that since you participated in the event, please keep this development in mind,  and if you feel unwell or feel so during the coming few days, please start taking all the precautionary measures, including going for a COVID PCR test if required.”
