Qatar 2022 W’Cup: Nigeria may face Cameroon, Ghana, Egypt in play-offs

Nigeria may be drawn against Egypt, Cameroon, Ghana, DR Congo or Mali when the draws for the play-offs of the Qatar 2022 World Cup draws are drawn.

The Super Eagles will know their play-off opponent on December 18.

The three-time African champions, who are ranked fifth in Africa according to the FIFA rankings, would avoid a clash with any of the other top four African countries.

This means the Eagles, who finished third at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, will not face the 2019 AFCON Champions, Algeria, as well as the tournament’s runners-up, Senegal.

Also, there will be no encounter between Nigeria and Tunisa, while a face-off with Morocco is also impossible.

Africa have five slots for the 2022 World Cup and 10 countries already qualified from the just concluded group stage qualifiers.

In determining the five representatives from the continent, the 10 countries that emerged winners of their various groups during the second round of qualifiers will have to trade tackles against each other on home and away basis.

Based on FIFA rankings, the first five teams, Algeria, Senegal, Morocco, Nigeria and Tunisia in that order are seeded teams ahead of the draw while the unseeded teams are Egypt, Mali, Ghana, DR Congo and Cameroon.

The seeded teams cannot be paired against one another in the play-off draw but they can face anyone from the unseeded teams.

The five seeded teams will be drawn against the five unseeded teams and the winners will qualify for the 2022 World Cup.

The draw will be conducted on December 18 while the matches will be played in March 2022.

Since the country’s debut in 1994, Nigeria have participated in all World Cup final tournament excepted for the 2006 finals hosted by Germany after narrowing missing out to Angola owing to the head-to-head rule that favoured the Palancas Negras after both sides finished the group with the same points.
