Onuachu transfer snub shocking, former Genk boss

Former Racing Genk coach John van den Brom has expressed his surprise after no club made an offer for Nigeria international Paul Onuachu in the summer transfer window.

The striker had a wonderful 2020/21 season in the Belgian Pro-League and finished the season with 33 goals to beat Club Brugge’s Clinton Mata from Angola and Genk teammate Théo Bongonda from Belgium to second and third places respectively.

The Super Eagles striker was named Genk’s best player of the season and also won the Ebony Shoe award – given to the best African or African origin player in the Belgian Pro-League.

Following a stellar performance for Genk, a big move to a club in the top five European Leagues in the summer was on the card with many European clubs showing interest in the FC Ebedei product.

However, a move for the lanky striker failed to happen as no concrete offer was received by the club.

Van den Brom, former Genk manager in an interview with Het Laatste Nieuws was surprised no offer came for the 27-year-old.

“Paul hoped for a transfer, but in the end, no one came,” he told Het Laatste Nieuws via voetbalkrant.

“The last days before the closing of the transfer window he realized that he would have to stay. Was he disappointed? Let’s say he’s a boy who’s too sweet.

“Dimitri De Condé then very cleverly extended Onuachu’s contract. But I still don’t understand that no club was concrete for him.

“Put Paul in a top league, surround him with even better players and he will score his goals there too. I really like him very much.”

Despite a below performance from the forward, Onuachu has scored 10 goals in 14 league games played so far this season.
