Increase allocations to NIPOST, Remi Tinubu begs FG

The Chairman Senate Committee on Communications, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, (Lagos Central) has appealed to the Federal Government to increase budgetary allocation to the Nigeria Postal Service.

She said such increment would enable NIPOST to discharge its responsibilities effectively.

Tinubu made the appeal on Tuesday while speaking with journalists at the National Assembly after presenting the report of her committee to the Senate Appropriation Committee.

She commended the Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Ibrahim Pantami, for ceding N200m in his ministry’s 2022 budget proposal to NIPOST, which had zero capital allocation.

She described her presentation to the Appropriation Committee as ‘quite well’ because there was nothing much to defend since ‘NIPOST only had about N4bn budget’.

Tinubu noted that some things were wrong with Nigeria in the management of institutions like NIPOST.

She said, “I will tell you that in the times I lived in the US and even at times, when I go to London, I used the post office.

“As we speak, our NIPOST is supposed to be doing very well if it is well funded with increased budgetary allocation. They can also operate something like a bank, with appropriate funding.

“If I want to even exchange money, when I go abroad, I go to the post office at times and we go to the bank; you have the option of the post office.

“If you have that, why can’t we develop a postal system, like in those years past, when we used our postal system to write letters to people; they were effective.

“Now, we talk about internet and all that, but outside, they use the post; their postal agencies are still viable. So why would we not try to revive NIPOST and see what it can do for us?”

She said the National Assembly had proposed a law to give NIPOST the autonomy it required, adding that the agency had a lot of properties that it could also go into real estate.
