Commonwealth Games medallist Ojo Onaolapo in this interview with KELVIN EKERETE talks about life outside table tennis, family and many more

not for table tennis, what other sports would you have done?

I would have been a boxer. That’s another sport that was widely followed while I was growing up. A lot of my friends are into boxing and I think I would have been very successful at it but table tennis won my heart.

What are your pre-match rituals?

I pray. Before every game I saw a word of prayer for the game to go my way, of course, you must have been well prepared for it to work but before and after every game I play, I pray. Nothing beats that as a pre-match ritual.

What’s your favourite meal and why do you prefer it?

Rice, spaghetti with stew is my favourite meal and it is one meal I can eat any time of the day. I love Nigerian meals as well but I have always loved spaghetti.

Are you a lover of designer clothes and shoes or you’re comfortable in anything?

I love designer wears and shoes but most of all, I love wearing anything that makes me comfortable. I am not also someone who is crazy about names. If it fits and is comfortable, I’m fine. I also love clothes made from Nigerian materials and well-designed.

I love looking good. Your looks may be the reason someone may endear themselves to you so I always love looking good at all times. I

How do you relax after a stretch of stressful events?

After a stressful day or coming back from a tournament, what I do mostly is take a long bath, after that I watch TV or play video games. I love playing video games with family and friends because I’m really good at it and it has a way of calming nerves.

On a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you love parties?

Parties are okay but I seldom attend. I rarely go out, I’m an indoor person. I get invited but that’s not my kind of fun.

Who’s your favourite musician and what song is your current favourite?

Honestly, I don’t really have a favourite artiste. I’m crazy about one particular name neither do I have a favourite song. I listen to good music and the songs I listen to at a particular time depends on my mood. But at the moment, I’m listening to Wizkid’s Made in Lagos. The songs on the album are great and they make me happy.

I love a number of Nigerian songs. Nigerian artistes are doing really well now and the whole world is listening to them.

What’s your dream car and what brand of car do you drive now?

My dream car is any of the latest Ferraris. I love fast cars, the Ferrari is not just fast, its also classy and that’s why I love them. At the moment. I drive a Hyundai 2020 model. It is very sleek as well but it’s not a Ferrari.

What are your thoughts on the #ENDSARS issues back home?

It was so sad seeing our loved ones die when all they did was protest peacefully. These killings and atrocities need to stop.

Who is your celebrity crush, sports or movies?

I’ve never crushed on any celebrity. I just watch movies and move on. I enjoy movies and that’s it. In sports, I don’t have a crush there too. It’s weird but that’s just the way it is.

Who was the toughest national team player you played against?

All of my teammates at the Nigerian national team were tough. I’ve had the opportunity to play with and against a lot of them at competitions and in training and honestly, they’re all very good and tough. The legendary Segun Toriola, Bode Abiodun, Quadri Aruna and Jide Ogidiolu are some of the best I’ve played against and they can hold their own anywhere around the world. I love and respect them all.

Tell us about your relationship life, girlfriend, wife, family?

I have a son. I love him to the moon and back.

You’ve lived in Europe before moving to America, which country would you say has the best style and why?

Americans have the best style. Europeans especially Italians are very stylish in terms of dressing but what makes America better is the fact that people of different ethnicity live there so you get to see different styles people present on a daily basis.
